Well for those of you who actually read my personal blog posts, I made a rather life changing decision over the last couple of weeks. My background is Political Science, I switched to Sociology for a few reasons. One: Poli Sci at the time I first enrolled in college wasn’t exactly a catered field. There were very few classes that were offered and it wasn’t taken seriously. Two: I felt Sociology was broader and would help me with my weakness, which is writing. Mostly grammar issues. Which was one of the reasons I wasn’t an English major, . Three: I had an amazing Into to Sociology teacher who made me love it, so coupled with my first two reasons, I switched.

As time went on I found a love of mass media and entertainment and decided to pursue a career in public relations. I knew full well what I was in for. PR is one of the most competitive fields mostly because of the end result, the glamorous life style that comes with it after the hard work is said and done. Unfortunately I have yet to have a breakthrough. Don’t get me wrong I’d love to continue to pursue it, I just have yet to get a chance.

I currently live at home and it is not the ideal situation. I’ve out grown my place here and rarely interact with my mother and sister. As a matter of fact when we do interact it’s mostly negative. As I browsed For Hire ads and sent out my resume and portfolio I became more and more discouraged at the low prospects, an email or phone call to alert me as to why I’m not what their looking for is a lot better than not hearing anything at all.

I started to reevaluate my life and career choices. My quarter life crisis has been taking a toll on me and the more I get involved in PR the shallower it seems to me, as much as I would like to be involved in it I realized my reasons were mainly for the lifestyle. I want my life to mean something, I would like to do something of substance and besides picking a career doesn’t mean you have to stick to it your entire life, if you’re brave enough to change it, you will. I decided to go back to my background in Poli Sci and mix it with my Sociology training and officially registered for the FSOT. I could have a lucrative career and do some good.

For those of you don’t know, the FSOT is a test in order to gain a place as a diplomat working for the U.S. government, on the homeland and over seas. The main reason for this post is because I’ve decided to chronicle my journey to becoming a diplomat. As I’ve been preparing for my test (June 10) I’ve found an abundance of information regarding the test and it’s overwhelming, so I figured since I have a blog why not use it to A) Track my progress and B) Maybe help others who make the same decision.

Hopefully I ace the Multiple Choice test and get to move on to the next phase which is PNQ’s. Like I said I’ll keep everyone who wishes to know updated on my progress and what the whole process is like. I’ll still post and repost pretty things but at a even more irregular intervals than they have been now.

I’ve turned 26. I’m 4 years from 30 and still haven’t found my niche. I’ve hit a wall, career wise and creativity wise. I sit at my computer, boot it up, open up a blank document and it stays that way. The countless requests for job interviews and hearing nothing in return is discouraging. I find myself thinking “Am I pursuing the right career? Did I make a mistake somewhere? Why am I not good enough for at least an interview? Should I go back to school just to get a shot?”

This way of thinking is unhealthy. I’m stuck at a dead end part time job and if I’m not job hunting I’m sleeping. I’m at a stand still. All of this sends me reeling. My quarter life crisis is exactly that, a crisis. I need to get my act together and put my butt into gear and just be a bigger force and make some changes in my process.

People say at 26 it’s ok to feel like you’re free falling. I’ve had people tell me I’m too young to feel so old, that’s how I feel, old and trapped. Hopefully some good things are coming my way, something, anything that will push me in the right direction or show me that I’m already in the right direction. It can’t stay this way forever.

Gasp! 4 more years to 30.
